Extension 1

Extension 1 English is a challenging, exciting course that allows students the opportunity to engage in extensive, independent research around a concept.

In 2017 students are studying the concept After the Bomb from Module B, Texts and Ways of Thinking.

This unit focuses on the period from the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, to the fall of the Berlin wall.

The set texts are:

  • Poetry: Sylvia Plath
  • Play: Waiting for Godot
  • Novel: The spy who came in from the cold

Students engage in a range of critical and creative compositions in which they explore the 'ways of thinking' of this period. They analyse how texts use language and other techniques to convey ideas and concepts. This rigorous academic course is an excellent preparation for university, and students at Woonona High School consistently achieve well above the state average in this course.
