Food Technology Stage 6

Students at Woonona High School have the opportunity to elect Food Technology as a path of study in Stage 6. Students do not need to have previously studied Food Technology in Years 9 and 10 to elect this course in Year 11.  The course is suitable for both genders and provides opportunities and challenges for all students of all abilities. Students studying Food Technology may also elect to study Hospitality as an additional elective course.

Students are provided the opportunity to learn through practical application and experimentation, with at least 30% of the course being practical in nature. They also will develop skills relating to food that are relevant and transferable to other settings. Such skills include the ability to research, analyse and communicate. Students also develop the capability and competence to experiment with and prepare food as well as design, implement and evaluate solutions to a range of food situations.

Throughout the course factors that influence food availability and selection are examined and current food consumption patterns in Australia investigated. Food handling is addressed with emphasis on ensuring safety and managing the sensory characteristics and functional properties of food to produce a quality product. The role of nutrition in contributing to the health of the individual and the social and economic future of Australia is explored.
