Extended Experiences

At Woonona High School, learning doesn’t stop when the bell rings. Our extra-curricular programs provide students with rich opportunities to explore interests, develop talents, and build confidence beyond the classroom.

Students are encouraged to get involved in a wide range of activities across sport, creative and performing arts, leadership, academic extension, technology, and community engagement. Whether students are representing the school, discovering a new passion, or working collaboratively with peers, extra-curricular participation supports personal growth, wellbeing and a strong sense of belonging.

These opportunities help students develop teamwork, resilience, leadership and time-management skills while strengthening their connection to school life. We value inclusive participation and aim to ensure all students can access experiences that broaden horizons and enrich their high school journey.

Japanese exchange program - inbound and outbound

One highlight of our extra-curricular offerings is Woonona High School’s Japanese exchange program. This program provides students with the opportunity to immerse themselves in Japanese language and culture through authentic, real-world experiences. Students develop intercultural understanding, global awareness and confidence as they build relationships with peers overseas and navigate new environments. Participation in the exchange strengthens communication skills, independence and adaptability, while deepening students’ appreciation of Australia’s place in a global community. For many students, the exchange is a transformative experience that broadens aspirations and fosters lifelong curiosity and respect for other cultures.

Inbound

Each July and August we welcome visitors from our two sister schools in Japan and our students gain valuable insights into different cultures while developing empathy, responsibility and communication skills. Hosting encourages students to step outside their comfort zone, build confidence, and see their own school and community through a global lens. By sharing everyday routines, school life and Australian culture, students strengthen friendships, leadership skills and a sense of pride in representing their school.

Outbound

When Year 9-11 students (each even year) travel to Japan as part of the exchange program, they experience deep cultural immersion that extends well beyond the classroom. Living with a host family allows students to practise language skills in authentic, everyday contexts while developing independence, adaptability and resilience. Through school visits, cultural experiences and daily life in Japan, students gain global awareness, confidence and a deeper understanding of different perspectives. The exchange supports personal growth, strengthens intercultural understanding and often broadens students’ aspirations, leaving a lasting impact on their learning and sense of place in the world.

Pacific Theatres of War excursion (Year 11 and 12 Modern History students)

The Pacific Theatres of War excursion (run in April of odd years) to Nagasaki, Hiroshima and Pearl Harbor provides students with a profound and immersive learning experience that deepens their understanding of modern history. Visiting these significant sites allows students to engage directly with the human impact of conflict, moving beyond textbooks to develop empathy, critical thinking and historical perspective. The experience encourages reflection on the causes and consequences of war, the ethics of decision-making, and the lasting effects of conflict on societies and individuals. Through guided learning and shared reflection, students build historical literacy, maturity and global awareness, strengthening their capacity to think critically about the past and its relevance to the world today.

Great Barrier Reef (Year 11 Geography and Environmental Science students)

The Year 11 Great Barrier Reef excursion provides students with a powerful, place-based learning experience that brings geographic concepts to life. By studying the Reef first hand, students deepen their understanding of ecosystems, sustainability, environmental change and human impacts on fragile environments. The excursion strengthens fieldwork skills such as observation, data collection and analysis, while encouraging critical thinking about conservation, climate change and global responsibility. Experiencing one of the world’s most significant natural environments fosters environmental literacy, stewardship and a deeper appreciation of the interconnected relationship between people and place.
