Woonona High is committed to improving literacy and has invested in the Accelerated Reader program. This online program helps teachers and the teacher-librarian manage and monitor student's independent reading practice.
Almost half (46%) of Australians over 15 lack the literacy skills they need to meet the demands of everyday life and work. Literacy is one of the most important foundations for success in school and life. It is well documented that an individual's literacy levels affect their opportunities in life for education, employment, income, and wellbeing
Students are now required to obtain a Band 8 in Literacy, in the Year 9 Naplan results, to be eligible to undertake the HSC. The Accelerated Reader program aims to assist students to achieve this.
Parent involvement is crucial. Students will be asked to read a book during their weekly lesson. However one period a week is not enough. Please ensure your child also reads for at least 20 minutes each night.
Please check our accelerated reader list.
