A personalised approach
Woonona High School is partnering with Big Picture Learning to offer young people in our area a more personalised way to learn.
We know that students learn best when they're genuinely motivated. When there's real passion behind what someone is doing, deep knowledge follows naturally. Through Big Picture, students pursue their own interests and shape their learning around their individual passions, needs, preferences and goals.
Students also gain real-world experience through regular internships with mentors in the community, helping them explore their interests, build connections, and map out a pathway toward future employment, training or study.
What if I could choose what, when and how I learn?
In Big Picture, students shape their own learning plans and projects around the topics that genuinely interest them. They manage their own time and have the freedom to explore a topic as deeply as they choose.
What if my school genuinely knew about me, my interests and talents?
In Big Picture, we believe in educating "one student at a time, within a community of learners." Each student is unique, but never alone. Learning takes place in a small advisory class of 17 with a single dedicated teacher, allowing real time to get to know one another and understand each student's individual strengths. Families are an integral part of the learning journey too.
What if I could pursue my passions instead of waiting until I finish school?
In Big Picture, students regularly learn through internships with expert mentors who share their interests, gaining exposure to the latest thinking and technology in real workplace settings. Students can also undertake external courses, meaning they can leave school already holding relevant qualifications.
What if I could make, create and experiment with ideas that interest me?
In Big Picture, we champion learning by doing. Students might design their own experiment, build a fitness program, film a documentary, build a garden, dig into historical research, compose a song, plan and manage an event, design a computer game from scratch, or launch a fashion label — just a few of the many possibilities.
What if I could learn in a personalised way and still get to where I want to go after school?
In Big Picture, students have the opportunity to undertake the International Big Picture Learning Credential (IBPLC) in Years 11 and 12, which opens up non-ATAR entry to 19 universities across Australia (ang growing!) and gives employers, colleges and universities meaningful insight into each student's skills, qualities and knowledge.

Big Picture Learning Australia is a not-for-profit company established in 2006. Over 50 mostly public schools around Australia work with us to implement the Big Picture design for learning in urban, regional and remote settings.
